Consider with Michelle Barrera
1 Describe an art form or medium that piques your interest and why.
1 Mediums that involve using your hands and body movement. I picked up ceramics right before Covid shutdown and made a few bowls. There’s something natural and humanistic when you’re playing with texture and raw materials in your hands and learning to let go of perfection within every piece. Body movement is also something I’d like to explore more, like dance. I feel it awakens the soul and feminine fire.
2 What makes you feel safe?
2 I feel most safe when I feel like I can be myself.
3 Describe a scent that makes you feel a memory.
3 The scent of copal burning, or copal incense. It reminds me so much of Guatemala. I have a clear memory of walking through a crafts market in the town of Chichicastenango, Guatemala, and smelling the burning of copal in the streets. The town itself is rich with Mayan history, culture, and rituals. So the scent is a mini-reminder of my roots.
4 What does self-care look like to you?
4 Self-care to me means listening to your mind and body’s needs for recharging or releasing. Whether that means staying in bed and watching a comforting movie, or going out with friends and dancing. I see it as circulation of personal energy, and however you choose to manage that on your own terms.
5 What are your simplest pleasures?
5 A morning matcha and an evening mezcal negroni. Yin and yang.
